by Rev. John A. Hardon, S.J.
This catechism by Fr. John Hardon, SJ, is based on the encyclical letter Mysterium Fidei (“Mystery of Faith”) published by Pope St. Paul VI in 1965. The encyclical was written, according to Father Hardon, to “ensure that the liturgical modifications introduced by Vatican II would bear fruit for the sanctification of souls.” However, “errors regarding the Real Presence already evident” has prevented this from happening and great harm has been done to the Christian faithful, wrote Father Hardon in his Foreword to the book. “Pope Paul VI does not hesitate to say,” said Father Hardon, “that the understanding of the Mass is at the bedrock of Christian life and sanctity” (MF, 37).
In this little catechism, Father Hardon faithfully presents the teaching of Mysterium Fidei and also draws on the teachings of Pope St. John Paul II. It is in a Question and Answer format with references to the appropriate place where the information can be found in the encyclical, the complete text of which is also included. It is perfect for individual instruction or group discussion.
