St. Joseph is a saint for many special causes. His highest claim, however, is that of foster-father to the Redeemer, and glorious patron of fathers; he is the perfect example of what fatherhood is truly meant to be.
This informative question/answer format catechism on Redemptoris Custos, an Apostolic Exhortation of Pope John Paul II, is an excellent study for everyone, but has special appeal and meaning for families. St. Joseph is the Father of the Holy Family. In that role he is an important model and example to all fathers.
Msgr. Mangan's catechism, at 55 pages, is a must for all families. The text of Redemptoris Custos, is included as the second part of the catechism. A beautiful prayer to St. Joseph on the back cover gives us great opportunity for thoughtful reflection on the role of St. Joseph as husband of the Immaculate Virgin, father of the Child Jesus and protector of the Holy Family. We are drawn to see him as our protector and guide, too, and patron of a happy death.
